Flower research institute (FRI), Yunnan provincial academy of agricultural science, was established based on flower research center of horticulture research institute, which is engaged in new flower varieties selection, wild and special features flower resource using, flower good varieties seedlings (bulbs) development. It includes cut flower R&D center, bulb flower R&D center, rose R&D center, flower biotechnology laboratory (modern laboratory with the flower cell biology and the molecular biology research), the department of sales and etc. There are also more than 600 mu for flower varieties selection, over 200,000 m2 of greenhouse with various equipment, 3000 m2 of tissue culture room, 3000 m2 of cold room.
During the development of decade, with a foothold in the resources advantage of the flower industry of Yunnan, FRI expand the extensive cooperation with the Holland, Israel, Italy, Spanish and other countries as well as many domestic research units and enterprises. Great progress have been made in the using of wild flower, new varieties selection, the flower standardization planting techniques, post harvest processing techniques and the quality examination techniques of flower product. At present biodiversity and the molecular breeding of flowers are involved.
FRI has undertaken some international, national and provincial research projects, and was awarded achievement prize by ministry or province government. Especially we keep ahead in seedling virus-free tissue culture techniques, mass propagation techniques, standardization planting techniques of main flowers in Yunnan, keeping flower fresh and quality examination. Already near 10 new varieties of carnation and gerbera with independent intellectual property rights have been applied to national new variety protection. Mass produced seedlings (bulbs) of “Yunke” brand can be sold to 20 million yearly, and bring on around 10 thousand mu of planting area. Good market has been developed and over a hundred million of social economic interests were created. FRI insists on development of flower brand, technique brand, and talented person's brand all the way. Traditional techniques were combined with modern biotechnics. Research, development and sales were made progress in balance.
FRI were awarded the “National base demo of flower production” by national forest industry bureau and China Flower Association, authenticated “National industrialization project demo of advanced technology” by National Development and Reform Commission, and honored “Provincial advanced units of flower work” by Yunnan provincial government. The achievement obtained today is just our jumping-off point to tomorrow, FRI insists on opened evolvement, opened science research. We would like to cooperate with enterprise and research units, and make progress all together.
